When my grandson asked me to crochet a bag for him to keep his army men in, I realized I’m always in need of some type of small bag. If you are like me, I’m always throwing my change in the bottom of my purse, so I thought a small bag to clip onto my key ring would be perfect. I was working with Heart & Sole and thought this would be perfect for a key ring bag. Once I started, I couldn’t stop…making different size bags using different weights of yarn. The great thing is that is all one pattern. All you need to do is change the hook size appropriate for the yarn you will be using. These are great for carrying jewelry when traveling, use as favors at a shower, gift bags, little girl’s purse…I even made some and hung them on the Christmas tree with gift cards inside. The pattern I used is Key Ring Pouch. A similar project for knitters Mini Key Ring Purses. How would you use your little bags?
One of the favorite projects the Double Stitch gals love is what they call remixing. This involves taking a woven skirt, jacket or even a T-shirt and embellishing with yarn and crochet. Little did they know, that they are being fashionable and eco at the same time! Continue reading “Remix from the Double Stitch Twins”
We are launching a new feature in February…Crochet-a-Long, and it will be through our Red Heart Yarns Facebook page, and we will continue to blog about it here on HeartStrings. A couple weeks ago, I asked you to give me an idea of what you might like to work on for both knit and crochet projects. You have given us some wonderful suggestions and our first crochet-a-long will begin on February 14th (Knit-a-long coming soon). Numerous comments about wanting to learn or make sampler Afghans or throws, various types of ripple Afghans and grannies were mentioned. Based on those suggestions, we have selected 3 different crochet afghan patterns for you to choose from.

Back in New York to photograph more Red Heart projects, I love to have the chance to check out knits in all the store windows. January is the peak time shopping for warm stuff and the stores are full of scarves, hats, mitts and sweaters. For me, it’s the perfect time to look for knitwear inspiration. From the catalogs and web sites I’ve visited, this season seemed to lack color. A few store visits proved this fact – Club Monaco, J. Crew, Banana Republic. Yes, there were beautiful cables and textural knits, but everywhere I looked – neutrals!
Lace knitting never seems to wane in popularity. But if you are like me with limited knitting time, fine lace yarn doesn’t have great appeal. Of course in my mind, I want to sit down and spend hours casting on hundreds of stitches and follow a complex chart – but then reality sinks in and I realize that I have to get back to my Red Heart work. So much for my knitting dreams! Continue reading “Making Lace with Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller”
Last week on my way to a photo shoot, I passed the Club Monaco window. Amazing! Tons of Aran knits – stockings, scarves and sweaters. What a knitter’s delight! Half my stash is made up of Aran, ecru, off white, cream shades of various yarns. I love all the off-white stockings. I’ve made a note that it will be an idea for next year’s Christmas patterns. The huge long scarves are so nice; they have terrific stitch definition. Making stitch patterns in light shades of yarn is an excellent way to showcase your textural knitting and crocheting skills.
