Tip

The throw this month is made in With Love, but the samples are done in Soft. The squares are also smaller, but they have chain spaces just like the real throw.

To make the throw, you will make 20 squares and join them together on the final round. The joins are explained in the special instructions section at the top of the pattern.

The top square in this picture is the completed version of the square we’re using for the sample. The bottom square has started the final round, and has come to the chain-2 space in the side of the square.

We’ll start with the chain-2 join by itself, so you can get the idea of how these joins work. To work the chain-2 join, start by doing a chain 1. Drop the loop from the hook, and put the hook through the chain-2 space on the already-completed square. Then place the loop back on the hook.

April TOTM 2

Work another chain.

April TOTM 4

Continue working the round. Here you can see the two squares attached at the chain-2 join.

April TOTM 5

In the actual square you’ll be working joins along all of the edges, instead of just in the middle as in the above example. For the next example, we’ll work the chain-4 join. In the sample, this will be on the corner.

To do the chain-4 join, chain 2. Then remove the loop from the hook, put the hook through the chain-4 space on the completed square, and put the loop on the hook again.

April TOTM 6

Chain 2, then continue working the round.

Here are the two squares connected along the edge with a chain-4 join, a chain-2 join, and another chain-4 join.

I really like to crochet afghans

Graceful. I pictured cool clear water flowing in a blue stoned stream. The way a full length silk dress moves and flows in the smallest movement.

If I think I am ready to challenge a new stitch then I look for a pattern that has a tutorial, and I keep making things with the stitches that I am comfortable with!, until I am ready to move on!!

    • redheart Post author

Hi Roselle, Thank you for your question! The picture of the blue throw at the top of the post is the April Showers Throw, which is the featured throw. The pictures in green are a tutorial on how to join the squares as you go, which is a technique used in making the April Showers Throw. The giveaway winners will win the blue yarn to make the throw. You can get the PDF for the pattern at http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/april-showers-throw.

APRIL SHOWERS THROW–I printed this pattern and have worked through round three several times thinking I had done something wrong–I keep coming up with 12 dc (correct) and 16 sh 3 sps (I am supposed to have 12) please verify
    thanks, Carole

ok I found correction for round three and I was right–as I thought–however–round 4 needs adjustment also–there are in fact 4 dc- clusters and 20 ch 3 spaces!!!! and I right? on to round 5 –I am a former pattern tester for several designers within the CGOA!
