Music is the Issue! – Crochet Today!

I just got my January/February issue of Crochet Today! and I don’t think I’ve ever been this wowed! It’s their “music issue” and all the projects are inspired by musical themes. Fashions are presented like Bohemian Rhapsody in the form of a cozy shawl, and Purple
Haze is a sweater that is featured on the cover. Get the idea?! There are equally fun accessory projects with Broadway show themes, like the Chicago Headline cloche inspired by the hit musical. And for Valentine’s day gifts there are projects inspired by love songs, like You’re Still the One Throw. Continue reading “Music is the Issue! – Crochet Today!”

A Gift that Keeps Giving…

The Craft Yarn Council has a campaign called Each One Teach Two. The idea is that if each of us teaches just two people to knit or crochet then we can soon have the whole world sharing in the joy of using needles and hooks. I love this idea! Sharing knowledge is a gift that keeps giving. If you are getting together with family and friends this Thanksgiving, what could be nicer than spending some time enjoying yarn together. (It’s a good excuse to just sit after having a big meal.) Some of my favorite memories of childhood were those sitting next to my aunt or mother learning what to do with knitting needles and crochet hooks. How lucky we are that we may be able to give others nice cozy memories and a life of creating with yarn.

Get Crafty for the Holidays!

Knitting and crocheting are fun, no mess pastimes. You can do them while watching television (and the person with you still thinks you are totally spending time with them). But one Saturday, I spent some time making this snowman and felt like a kid again. I based my snowman on designer Dondi Richardson’s instructions. I loved using this fun faux snow stuff that you apply onto the Styrofoam® balls sort of like paint, but thick and gloppy. The snow dried while I went shopping.  I came home and finished the whole project in just a couple hours. The Doodle yarn covers the balls and cones easily using a low temperature glue gun. I love the funny face that I clumsily painted on him. Continue reading “Get Crafty for the Holidays!”

Into New Stitches?

If you’re like me, sometimes you want to knit away mindlessly and at other times it’s nice to try a new cable stitch. I just received the new Creative Knitting magazine and was thrilled to see the Autumn Afghan using Red Heart Soft yarn. Not only is it beautiful, it features a step-by-step article that actually teaches how to do the trinity stitch bobbles, little chain cross stitches, and bobble diamonds. Celebrate America with Crochet

I always love the 4th of July. It means parades, picnics and lots of fun. It’s the perfect holiday to spend outdoors with family and friends, plus so much of what we believe in as a country is exemplified on this holiday. Oh, and I almost forgot the best part of the 4th… the fireworks! It always gives me such an amazing feeling when I see fireworks. I have that same kind of feeling when our talented crochet designers create wonderful designs that reflect their love of country. So I thought this week would be the perfect time to show you a few of them. Continue reading “Celebrate America with Crochet”

Retro Red Heart Patterns

If you’ve been crocheting or knitting for awhile, you’ve probably come across vintage patterns from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Perhaps you have a box hiding in the back of your yarn closet (like me) of old patterns that have been given to you by someone whose mother has passed away. Or you’ve purchased old patterns for their old-time charm at an antique shop. These patterns connect us to the knitters and crocheters of the past and give us a sense of the wonderful tradition that we enjoy. Continue reading “Retro Red Heart Patterns”
