Welcome to the Cabled Afghan Knit-Along! Each week we share a new square pattern and help you learn to make it. Watch videos on Creativebug (sign up for a free account to get access to the videos) and see tutorials here on the blog.
This week we will be be working on the Checkerboard Cables Square (LW4309-D), which you can download the pattern for here.
In the previous squares, we’ve been working panels of cables interspersed with panels of Reverse Stockinette Stitch. In this square, we’re doing short sections of cables and short sections of Reverse Stockinette stitch in a checkerboard panel. You’ll alternate between 2 over 2 Left Cross (2/2 LC) and 2/2 RIght Cross (2/2 RC) cables on the different rows.
In the video Edie will cast on 20 stitches to show you the technique. Follow the pattern and cast on 50 stitches so your square will be the correct size.
Once again, do a cable cast on working between the stitches. Edie likes a cable cast-on when the first row is a right-side row, since it looks nice and smooth on the front.
Edie explains the instructions using the chart before you get started working, so you can get the idea of the square. If you examine the picture on the pattern PDF, you’ll see that the sides of the square are in Reverse Stockinette and the main part is the checkerboard pattern of the cables and the Reverse Stockinette stitch.
Looking at the chart, you’ll see for Row 1 you purl 3, knit 4, and then start the 10 stitch repeat. The repeat is purl 6, knit 4 across the row, and then you’ll end with another purl 3. Don’t forget your tally mark at the end of the row to make sure you remember where in the pattern you are!
In Row 2, you’ll knit the knits and purl the purls: knit 3, repeat purl 4, knit 6 across, and then end with a purl 4, knit 3.
Rows 3 and 4 are just like rows 1 and 2.
In Row 5 you’ll purl 3, then do a 2/2 LC. You’ll start the repeat, which is purl 6 then 2/2 LC. After doing the 10-stitch repeat across, you’ll end with a purl 3.
The 2/2 LC is similar to the previous cables we’ve done. You’ll slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold it in front, then knit the next 2 stitches before knitting the 2 stitches off of the cable needle.
Row 9 starts with purl stitches to start the Reverse Stockinette section, then you come to the 10 stitch repeat. You’ll work a purl 1, then knit 4, and end the repeated section with a purl 5. Work the repeat across the row, and end with a purl 3. You’re not knitting the knits and purling the purls on this row, so you’ll need to pay attention.
Row 10 keeps the sections of Stockinette stitch (for the cables) and Reverse Stockinette stitch that were established in Row 9. You’ll start with a knit 3, then come to the repeat and work knit 5, purl 4, knit 1 across, and end with 7 knit stitches.
Rows 11 and 12 and just like Rows 9 and 10.
In Row 13, you’ll purl the first 7 stitches, and then for the repeated section you’ll purl 1, do a 2/2 RC, then purl 5. Work the repeated section across the row, and end with a purl 3.
For the 2/2 RC, you’ll slip two stitches to the cable needle and hold it in back. Knit 2 stitches from the regular needle, and then knit the 2 from the cable needle.
Bind off in pattern on a right-side row and you’re finished!
