Cro-Shayley makes Crochet Today’s Fruity Sandals

Are you and your newborn heading to a pool party anytime soon?  Do you have a friend that’s expecting that loves the beach or lake?  A good college friend of mine is due to have a precious little girl in July and I’m attending her baby shower this weekend.  She frequently has weekend getaways to the lake and when I saw the Fruity Sandals in the July/August issue of Crochet Today, I most certainly had to make them for her!

FruitySandalsI call myself a “Bootie Makin’ Fool” because I just absolutely love to make booties for all my friends who are expecting!  But now, I’ll add these Fruity Sandals to my list because these are so darn cute I just can’t get over it.  One of my very first crochet projects was Red Heart’s Baby Boots.  I have pretty much memorized that pattern so making the sandal sole of this project was a piece of cake for me!  I used Tan in Red Heart Classic for the sole and Giggle in Soft Baby Steps for the trim, top, and heal strap.

This pattern includes a stitch I had never tried before, the popcorn stitch.  Below are the step by step instructions on how to crochet a popcorn.  Click here for more details.

(1) Work double crochet into one stitch.

(2) Remove the hook from the working loop and insert it from front to back into the top of the first double crochet in the group.

(3) Pick up the working loop on the last stitch made and pull this loop through the first stitch to close the popcorn. If the instructions specify it, work one chain to close and secure the popcorn.

After completing the top and the heel strap and sewing into place, you’re all finished!  This is a super quick and fun project!  Brighten a new mommy’s day and crochet her these Fruity Sandals!

FUN CRAFT TIP One tip I learned in a previous issue of Crochet Today is to add a couple dots of puff paint on the bottom of the soles so if the baby is walking this will help prevent from slipping.
