Are you a fan of the Holey Tops that are in style? Ever walk into a store and see some on the rack but just don’t want to pay $30 or more for one? Well, I don’t know about you, but now that I know how to crochet, I just can’t see myself spending that kind of money when I can just go home and make it! And since I’m not ready to let summer go quite yet, I finally decided to make one, the Trendy Top Overlay. Maybe I’ll get a few wears out of the top before it gets too cold.
This top is an EASY project perfect for any beginner ready to take the next step and create a top. Technically, all it is is 2 rectangles sewn together.
For this top, I used Turquoise in Red Heart Shimmer.
To begin, make your foundation chain the desired length for the appropriate size.
Row 1: Double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook and double crochet in the next 2 chains. Then chain 3, skip 3 chains, and double crochet in the next 3 chains. Repeat the highlighted section until you have 4 chains remaining on your foundation chain. Then chain 3, skip 3 chains and double crochet in the last chain. Row 1 complete!
Below shows the first 3 rows complete and an explanation:
Row 2 – Chain 3 then 2 double crochet in the first chain 3 space. Then chain 3, skip 3 double crochets, and double crochet in the next 3 chains. Repeat the hightlighted section until you come to the last 3 double crochets and you will chain 3, then skip 2 double crochets and double crochet in the top of the previous row’s beginning chain. Row 2 Complete! Now repeat Row 2 until you have your desired length. (I like my tops a little longer so I crocheted 32 rows instead of 25.)
Follow the same steps for the back piece but making it a little wider on the foundation chain. Below shows the front and back complete.
Now for the Edging & Assembly:
Slip stitch in first stitch on the last row of the Back piece, chain 1, 3 sc in next chain 3 space, single crochet in next 3 double crochets. Repeat the highlighted section across the last row of the Back piece. Once you come to the end of the Back piece, then repeat the highlighted section along last row of Front piece connecting the 2 pieces. Slip stitch in the first stitch to join. Now that the 2 pieces are connected, chain 1 and single crochet in each single crochet around for Round 1.
Below is an image of the 2 pieces connected by the lower edging.
Do the same thing for the top edging. Below is how the top looks so far.
Sew up the sides from the bottom up leaving room for the arm holes. You can either sew up the sides using the yarn and yarn needle or slip stitch the front to the back. I prefer the slip stitching route.
Almost finished….now for the tie. Make your foundation chain, turn and alternate between single crochet and double crochet for 2 rows.
Once the tie is made, thread it through the chain 3 spacing along the top edge or Row 1.
Once the tie is woven through the chain 3 spaces, give the tails a little tug to close the top opening a little.
Try it on and Voilà, you’re Trendy Top Overlay is COMPLETE! You can even accessorize and add a belt.
