Fabulous Friends and Granny Hats

Once high school and college are over you wonder if you will ever make lasting friends like you had when you were young. I grew up in Louisiana and moved to North Carolina as an adult so I was not sure it would happen. It did! I have five fabulous ladies that are my “grown up” friends. We all lived in the same neighborhood, five of us in the same cul-de-sac. Our kids grew up together and we remained friends even after most of us moved away. I think we are on 14 years now.

For the past 9 years this great group of friends have been getting together twice a year for Girls Weekend. In the Fall we go to the mountains and in the Summer we head to the lake. We always do little gifts on our trips so of course I have to do something crocheted. I usually wait too late to start working on my gifts so I have to make something quick since there are six of us (yes, I make one for myself for the photo ops).

A few years ago I saw a lady wearing a Granny Square hat and was thinking I should make one of those for myself. Hers was made of many different colors and just the cutest thing ever. A light bulb went off and decided this would be part of my gift. Each of my friends have a favorite NFL team so I went with team colors for each hat.

NFL Granny Hats
Our group consist of two Carolina Panther fans, a Baltimore Raven fan, a New England Patriot fan, a New York Giants fan and I am a proud New Orleans Saints fan! I know I made them, but I just love love love them :-) . Oh, and did I mention it’s a great way to use up that little bit of yarn that you just couldn’t part with? You could make every square different or exactly the same. There are so many options. This project from start to finish took me about two hours and I am on the slow side. Did someone say Christmas presents? Indeed!

Please see below for the pattern and some step-by-step photos:

FINISHING: Weave in ends. With wrong sides together, whip stitch four squares together in a row. With wrong sides together, attach the fifth square to one of the squares from the row of four squares.

Whip stitch remaining sides of fifth square to remaining sides of the row of squares and you have a hat!
