My First Hat with Marly Bird

Welcome to My First with Marly Bird! Each month Marly will teach you a new crocheting or knitting project. These projects are designed to make you comfortable as you transition between learning the stitches and making a project. Every design has a written pattern and a step-by-step video tutorial to follow along.

This month we’re featuring a slouchy crochet hat. Download the free pattern, buy the supplies for it from RedHeart.com, then watch Marly’s video to learn how to make it!

This hat is made with half double crochet, which is a versatile stitch slightly bigger than single crochet and slightly smaller than double crochet. (That’s why it’s called half-double crochet!) You’ll learn how to make a hat that works for women and men, and how to change colors in a project. Plus, Reflective yarn is unique since it reflects the light that hits it.

I have been crocheting for over 40 years. I love Red Heart yarn, and I love Red Heart patterns. Even though I have been crocheting for a long time, sometimes I will look at a video for a refresher on a step that is either something I haven’t done in a long time or a new technique that I want try. I have to say that Marly Bird’s videos are awesome. She is an excellent teacher as far as her knowledge of the craft goes and is very good about breaking the pattern down into bite-sized chunks, plus she seems very pleasant, both with tone of voice and facial expressions. I want to be Marly Bird’s BFF!
