My First Basketweave Cowl with Marly Bird

Welcome to My First with Marly Bird! Each month Marly will teach you a new crocheting or knitting project. These projects are designed to make you comfortable as you transition between learning the stitches and making a project. Every design has a written pattern and a step-by-step video tutorial to follow along.

This month we’re featuring a basketweave knit cowl. Download the free pattern, buy the supplies for it from RedHeart.com, then watch Marly’s videos to learn how to make them!

The cowl is knit using a common stitch pattern, and the soft cowl can be worn around your neck or over your head for additional warm. The Soft yarn drapes wonderfully and is easy to wash.

How many stitches do you cast on if only using one skein of Red Heart Soft?

Hi Brit, Thank you for your question. One ball of Soft will not give you enough yarn to make a similar cowl; it will be much smaller. If you are using multiple balls of Soft but only one strand at a time, you will have to figure out your gauge and adjust the number of cast on stitches based on that to make the same circumference.
