Granny Square in the Checkerboard Textures Throw Crochet Along

Welcome to the second square of the Checkerboard Textures Throw Crochet Along! This week we’ll be doing the Granny Square (LW4132-11), which you can download here. You will make this square a  total of 10 times for the afghan.

Enter for a chance to win a Red Heart Yarns prize pack by going to our Facebook page and putting your name and email in the entry form.  We’ll be choosing a new winner every two weeks!

We are posting pictures of how to do each stitch pattern and crochet  a very small sample square as an example. Use the stitch counts in the actual pattern to make the square big enough for an afghan.

To start, chain 4 and slip stitch together to form a ring.

Chain 3, which counts as the first double crochet, and then do two double crochets into the ring. Chain 2 then make three double crochets into the ring, then chain 2 and double crochet 3 times, then chain 2 and double crochet 3 times, chain 2, and then slip stitch the round closed. You will have 4 sections of 3 double crochets, and 4 corners made from the chain 2 sections.

Then, turn the square. In a typical granny square pattern, you will only be working from and seeing the right side of the square. For this pattern, you will be working from and seeing the right and wrong sides, just like in regular crochet.

For the second round, you will start with another chain 3 that counts as a double crochet. Then do another two double crochets, chain 2, and do 3 double crochets into the chain 2 space that makes up the corner. You will do a chain 1 to slip over the group of 3 double crochets in the round below. Then do 3 double crochets, a chain 2, and 3 double crochets in the next corner, and chain 1 to skip the group. Continue doing this pattern around. After the final chain 1, slip stitch the round closed.

Turn and do round three using the same pattern. In the chain 1 spaces, you’ll do groups of 3 double crochets in each space.

Continue in this pattern around (details are written in the pattern PDF) until you have done 8 rounds, turning between the right and wrong side each time. We only did rounds 1-4 for our sample (picture below is of rounds 1-4), but you’ll need rounds 1-8 for the afghan.

Round 9 is done on the right side and you will just double crochet in every double crochet in Round 8, and do one double crochet in each chain 1 space. In the chain 2 corner spaces you will do a double crochet, chain 2, double crochet.

After Round 9, do NOT turn the work. Just chain 1 and then single crochet in every double crochet in Round 9. In the chain 2 corner spaces, you will do a single crochet, chain 3, single crochet to make flat corners. Fasten off and you’re done!

You’ve completed the Granny Square for the Checkerboard Textures Throw (LW4132). Join us on February 19, 2014 when we’ll release the next square for this afghan.

Hi Gail, Thanks for pointing that out! The images should be fixed now.

It would be great if there was one pdf that had the entire pattern with intro and border.
