Honeycomb Trellis Square for Cabled Afghan Knit-Along

Welcome to the Cabled Afghan Knit-Along! Each week we share a new square pattern and help you learn to make it. Watch videos on Creativebug (sign up for a free account to get access to the videos) and see tutorials here on the blog.

This week we will be working on the Honeycomb Trellis Square (LW4309-H). You can download the pattern for this square here.

We’ll have a six st repeat across the square this time, so it is a little more relaxed. We’ll be learning the 1 over 2 Right Purl Cross (1/2 RPC) and 1 over 2 Left Purl Cross (1/2 LPC).

Using the cable cast-on, cast on 50 stitches. (For a Cable Cast-On review, see blog for square B.) For the video, Edie only used 14 stitches. This square has a 48 stitch middle section with a six stitch repeat, and then one selvedge stitch on each edge. The selvedge stitches help make the square lie neatly.

First we’ll work the two Set-Up Rows. For Set-Up Row 1, knit 1 for a selvedge stitch, then work the 6 stitch repeat: knit 1, purl 4, knit 1. Continue doing the six stitch repeat across to the last stitch then knit the last stitch. On Set-Up Row 2, the wrong side row, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches to start Reverse Stockinette stitch.

For Row 1 of the pattern, row 3 of the square, we’ll be doing the 1/2 LPC: moving 1 knit st across 2 purl stitches.

Put the knit stitch on the cable needle and hold in front.

Purl the next 2 stitches, which are already purl stitches.

Then knit the stitch off of the cable needle.

We’re maintaining our knit stitches as knit stitches and our purl stitches as purl stitches, just changing the order in which they are worked.

LW4309-H 1-2 LPC

Immediately after we complete the 1/2 LPC we work a 1/2 RPC, where we will cross the 1/2 RPC.

Put 2 purl stitches on the cable needle and hold in back.

Knit 1 stitch, which is already a knit stitch.

Then purl 2 from the cable needle.

Again we’ve maintained the knit and purl stitches but just changed their order.

LW4309-H 1-2 RPC

Continue doing this 6 stitch repeat of 1/2 LPC and 1/2 RPC across the row then knit the final stitch.

On the next 3 rows, Rows 2, 3, and 4, you’ll knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. On these rows you’ll also knit on the wrong side (even) rows and purl on the right side (odd) rows to make Reverse Stockinette stitch on the selvedge stitches.

Row 5 is another twist row. Knit the first stitch, then do a 1/2 RPC followed by a 1/2 LPC. You’ll notice this is the opposite order in which we did the twists in Row 1. Continue working the 6 stitch repeat across the row and end with a knit 1 on the selvedge.

You’re moving the knit stitches around on a background of Reverse Stockinette stitch.

On the next 3 rows, Rows 6, 7 and 8, knit the knits and purl the purls to complete your entire row repeat.

Work Rows 1-8 a total of 8 times then bind off on a right side row.

Looking at the completed and blocked square, you can see the all-over pattern with the knit stitches popping out over the Reverse Stockinette stitch background.

I am really enjoying this KAL and am getting a few Christmas Presents done in the bargain!! Thanks for doing this one at a weekly pace, so I can get a few squares of each pattern done and still keep pace with everyone else ;-). Anne

I have done my rows for the Honeycomb Trellis Square and am ready to bind off. I know that I am to bind off in pattern on row one, but I have a question. Do I just bind off knitting the knit stitches and purling the purls or do I do the right and left purl crosses while I bind off?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi Johanne, Great question! You don’t need to do the crosses on the bind off.
