Lattice Cables Square for Cabled Afghan Knit-Along

Welcome to the Cabled Afghan Knit-Along! Each week we share a new square pattern and help you learn to make it. Watch videos on Creativebug (sign up for a free account to get access to the videos) and see tutorials here on the blog.

This week we will be working on the Lattice Cables Square (LW4309-K). You can download the pattern for this square here. This is the final square in the afghan!

This is an all-over pattern with 2 over 2 crosses and a 6 stitch repeat. The pattern can be tricky, but with the video, written pattern and chart you’ll be fine.

Row 1 is a wrong-side row, so use a long-tail cast on. (See the blog for square F for instructions on the long-tail cast-on.) You’ll cast on 68 stitches, while Edie will be working with 20 stitches. You cast on more stitches here since this pattern really draws in, so it takes more stitches to reach the same width as the previous squares.

Row 1 begins with 3 knit stitches for Reverse Stockinette on a wrong-side row, and then 4 purl stitches. The 6 stitch repeat has 2 knits and 4 purls across. You’ll repeat the 6-stitch repeat across the square and end with a knit 1.

Row 2 starts the cables, and Edie will start using her row counter (see the blog for square I for instructions on making and using this style of row counter). You’ll purl 1, then work a 2 over 2 Left Cross (2/2 LC) (see the blog for square D for instructions). Purl 2, then repeat the pattern of 2/2 LC, purl 2 across the row. End the row with a purl 1.

Row 3 is the same as Row 1: you will knit the knits and purl the purls.

Row 4 gets a little tricky. Start by purling 3 then knitting 2 and work a 2 over 2 Right Purl Cross (2/2 RPC). You’ll move 2 knit stitches over 2 purl stitches. Put the 2 purl stitches on the cable needle and hold in back.

Knit he next 2 stitches, then purl the 2 from the cable needle.

Repeat the pattern of knit 2, 2/2 RPC across the row to the last 5 stitches. End with a knit 4, purl 1.

Row 5 allows you to knit your knits and purl your purls again, but the order of knit and purl stitches is different than in Rows 1 and 3.

If you’re having trouble keeping track of where you are in your chart, use a sticky note on your chart. Put the note on your chart so that you can see the previously completed rows and the row you are currently working on so it is easy to follow along.

Row 6 starts with a purl 3, then a 2 over 2 Right Cross, where you cross knit stitches over knit stitches. Repeat the pattern purl 2, 2/2 RC across the row and end with a purl 1.

Row 7 is the same as Row 5.

Row 8 is the final row in this 8-row repeat. Purl 1 then knit 4, then work a 2 over 2 Left Purl Cross (2/2 LPC). To work a 2/2 LPC, you’ll be passing 2 knit stitches over 2 purl stitches. Take the next 2 stitches, both knit stitches, and put them on a cable needle to hold in front.

Purl 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.

Knit 2 plain stitches. Repeat the pattern of 2/2 LPC, knit 2 across the row and end with a purl 3.

You can see that the cables look woven. As you continue the 8 row repeat the pattern will develop more.

Repeat rows 1-8 a total of eight times, then repeat Row 1 once more. Bind off in pattern on the right side.
