Learn a Stitch, Make this Textured Cowl

Welcome to the sixth entry in our ongoing series Learn a Stitch, Make a Cowl! Each month in 2015 we will teach you a new crochet or knit stitch. You can then use the stitch when you make the featured cowl. This month our stitch is the bobble, and the cowl is the Le Papillon Cowl in Boutique Unforgettable. Keep reading to learn the stitch and enter to win! Use the hashtag #learnstitches to talk about the series.

Tip

Bobbles create bumps in the fabric by gathering loops of yarn. Bobbles “pop out” on the right side of the fabric.

The pattern calls for Boutique Unforgettable, but the example is in Soft Yarn so you can follow along easier. For this tutorial we’re working into a row of single crochet, just like you will for the actual pattern, and just like the pattern we have started the row with a single crochet.

To start the bobble, yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, and yarn over and pull up a loop. You’ll have three loops on your hook.

SOTM-June-1

Next, yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, and yarn over and pull up a loop. You’ll have five loops on your hook.

SOTM-June-2

Repeat the second step three more times. You’ll have 11 loops on your hook.

SOTM-June-3

Yarn over, and carefully pull the loop through all 11 loops on your hook. Go slowly, as it can be difficult to pull through all of the separate loops.

SOTM-June-4

You’ll work another single crochet in the next stitch after the bobble.

SOTM-June-5

A row of bobbles stands out with single crochets in between each one.

SOTM-June-6

Continue the pattern with a row of single crochet after the bobble row, and then start the shell stitches following the pattern.

I usually don’t crochet, however this instructor is so excellent, that I think I will absolutely be able to do this! She goes slow enough, and explains so throughly, that I am not intimidated by this pattern. Thanks for her!

Thank you, Marly, for a very nice video tutorial for a lovely cowl. It’s a good thing you are as talented in talking fast as you are in crocheting! LOL ! Seriously, I liked the way you showed exactly where to put all the helpful markers and your directions are clear and exact.

How do I go about posting a picture of my cowl, please?

What a novel way of creating a bobble! Looks like a bullion stitch! Will have to make this pattern even if I don’t make the cowl of it ;D I’m thinking a pretty wrap will work as well, and in alternating colors might make the stitches pop even more! Thanks for the stitches, the pattern AND all the wonderful colors and textures of yarn!
