Mermaid Blanket Round-Up

Have you seen or made a mermaid tail blanket? These blankets are in a taper shape with fins at the bottom, and are designed to be tucked around your legs so you look like a mermaid sitting on a couch. Other versions are a large cocoon, which you can slip your legs into. There are hundreds of versions for adults and kids, plus baby cocoons and patterns for dolls. Most patterns are crocheted, although a few are knit. We have gathered some popular free patterns from around the web for you.

Some of the mermaid blankets have basic stitch patterns, while others have stitches such as the crocodile stitch or shells so they look like scales.

My daughter has been asking for a mermaid afghan for a few months now. I thank you for posting this one. Now I have not worries about a Christmas gift for her this year. I am excited about getting started. One question, are you using variegated yarn and solid yarn? or could you use self striping yarn?

Hi Carla, Thank you for your question! Any color pattern of yarn will work, but the effects will be different. We suggest experimenting using the pattern you’re going to use and making the size you’re going to use. Working in rows long enough to work as a portion of the blanket will create a different color pattern than working in shorter rows just for a swatch.

Hi Gayle, Thank you for reaching out, but we don’t understand your question.

If you’re looking for the patterns: Click on the name or the picture for any of the blankets and you will be taken to the page where the blanket pattern is.
If you’re wondering how to use the blankets: Some of the blankets you slide your legs into like a sleeping bag. Others are just like a regular blanket, but shaped in a triangle instead of a rectangle.

If you have additional questions please let us know.

Hi Janet, Thank you for your question. Without knowing which item you’re trying to make, we cannot help with the amount of yarn needed. The number of balls is always listed on patterns on For patterns hosted elsewhere, please contact that site for assistance.
