Welcome to the Cabled Afghan Knit-Along! Each week we share a new square pattern and help you learn to make it. Watch videos on Creativebug (sign up for a free account to get access to the videos) and see tutorials here on the blog.
This week we will be working on the Stockinette Cables Square (LW4309-E). You can download the pattern for this square here.
Unlike the past squares, this square is worked entirely in Stockinette stitch (knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side). We’re using cables you already know from past squares: 2 over 2 Left Cross (2/2 LC) and 2 over 2 Right Cross (2/2 RC). Additionally, Edie will show you how to work these cables without a cable needle.
In the video Edie casts on 10 stitches for one repeat, but you should follow the instructions in the PDF and cast on 50 stitches to make the proper sized square. Go ahead and use the cable cast-on again, since the first row is a right-side row.
Unlike the charts for previous squares, which had gray reverse stockinette squares, this chart is entirely in Stockinette stitch. The square has a single selvedge stitch on each side, an 8-stitch repeat, and an 8-row repeat.
For Row 3 you will knit one selvedge stitch, and then work a 2/2 RC. To work the 2/2 RC: place two stitches on the cable needle and hold them in back of the work. Knit two stitches from the regular left hand needle, and then knit the two stitches from the cable needle. You will have switched the positions of the two sets of 2 stitches. Knit 4 plain stitches to complete the repeat section. Continue doing 2/2 RC then knit 4 for the rest of the row. At the end of the row knit the final selvedge stitch.
Rows 4 through 6 are plain Stockinette, beginning with a purl row.
Row 7 is the second cable row. Knit 1 selvedge stitch, then knit 4 to start the 8-stitch repeat. Do a 2/2 LC: place 2 stitches on the cable needle and hold in front of your work, knit 2 stitches from the regular left hand needle, then knit the 2 stitches from cable needle. Repeat the 8-stitch repeat of knit 4 then 2/2 LC across the row, then knit 1 for the final selvedge stitch.
Row 8 is a regular purl row and completes the 8 row repeat for this square.
Edie started the second 8 row repeat for the square and will show you how to work the cables without a cable needle. Cables work by changing the order that you work stitches in. So far we’ve been using a cable needle to help move the stitches around and place them into their new order, but this method rearranges the stitches without needing another piece of equipment.
To work a 2/2 RC without a cable needle, ignore the first two stitches (the two you would normally place on a cable needle) and slip the point of the right hand needle into the front of the next two stitches.
“Pop” the first two stitches off of the left hand needle…
Work Stockinette stitch for rows 4 through 6, and we’ll practice this technique again on Row 7 for the second cable row in the 8 row repeat.
Knit the first selvedge stitch, then knit the next 4 stitches until it is time to cable. This time, skip the first two stitches and insert the point of the right hand needle through the back of the 2nd two stitches.
