A popular craft project is wrapping letters with yarn to make holiday decorations. Simply get some cardboard or papier mache letters at your local craft store, and wrap yarn around them to form a personalized message for your home. Read on to for tips on how to choose the perfect word and how to get started.
Before you can buy your letters you will need to choose what word or words you want to spell. It may be easiest to figure out where you will put your letters and what occasion they will be for. Will they go on the mantle, on a bookshelf, or over a child’s bed? Will they have a theme for Thanksgiving, or a birthday, or a child’s name? Sometimes it can be difficult to come up with just the right word, so we have lists below for several occasions. Be inspired or chose your own!

How To Make
You will need the yarn in the colors you want. For our PEACE letters we used 1 ball of RED HEART® Holiday® in 1360 Aran/Gold. For our FUN letters we used RED HEART® Soft® in 9518 Teal, 4422 Tangerine, and 3720 Lavender. You can use one solid color for the entire word or phrase, change colors on different letters, or even make stripes of color in one letter!
You will also need papier-mache letters for the word or words you want to spell, white craft glue, sharp scissors, push pins, and a yarn needle.
For more detailed steps, you can read the PDF patterns for our PEACE and FUN letters. Basically you will glue pieces down to the ends of the letters, where they will not be wrapped. You will then wrap the outsides of the letters.
You can keep the letters plain, as in our PEACE letters. You can also add decorations, such as the flowers that are attached on our FUN letters. Other fun decorations include springs of holly or evergreen, birthday hats, small balloons, and pompoms. Let your imagination go wild!
